British Council names 'I am a change maker' winners
MANILA, Philippines — The British Council recently announced the winners of its “I am a Changemaker competition.
Seed Core Enterprises is the Luzon winner and recipient of the Starbucks Special Award. The team won for their Planting S.E.E.D.S. program which aims to organize rural or forest-based communities to plant cacao as a reforestation species to service the growing demand for chocolate in local and international markets. Access to capital, training, funding and livelihood programs are folded into the program to create a financial, social and environmental framework for the communities involved.
Visayas winner UC Banilad was chosen for its project for the Women’s Group of Umapad, an isolated barangay in Mandaue City, Cebu where the city dumpsite is located. Dubbed “Seeds of Hope,” the program hopes to provide the group a source of livelihood by utilizing mango seed scraps as primary raw material for tahe extraction of oil used in numerous cosmetic products. Mango seed scraps are already considered waste products by several mango processing companies in Cebu, thus putting these into good use would help in recycling environmental waste.
