Fred Rayburn doesn't do basketball any more. Three years ago he put away his referee's whistle, figuring 20 years of running up and down local high school courts and trying to keep pace with the increased tempo of today's game was enough.
But he has not given up the game.
Rayburn, a native Indianan and retired Navy man, still has his fingers on the pulse of local basketball. He is the man of last resort if coaches have a complaint — or if in that rare instance they want to make a compliment — about a local striped shirt.
The 67-year-old Rayburn is the assigning secretary — commissioner is his official title — for the Peninsula Basketball Officials Association (POBA). He currently overseas the work schedule for 53 local whistle-blowers, which by the way is not nearly enough bodies to avoid doubling up for junior varsity and varsity basketball games, both girls and boys.
Looking over a full Tuesday or Friday schedule of high school games and it doesn't seem possible Rayburn can get them all covered. But he does. The POBA covers schools from North Mason to Bainbridge, with Vashon thrown in to make it even tougher.
