Palm Beach Shores veteran relives Pearl Harbor attack 70 years later

Ferdinando D'Alauro was a little bit upset with his son Frederic, who
suggested that D'Alauro give an interview about his experiences on Dec. 7,
1941.
He's 88. It's way too late to start dredging up memories. He was just an 18-year-old radio operator and can't imagine why his experiences would interest anyone.
But with a reporter plunked down in front of the Palm Beach Shores man and a photographer setting up lights, he gave in, with some coaxing from his wife of 61 years, Dina.
D'Alauro had to get his mother's permission to enlist in the Navy in 1940, when he was still 17. The war was on in Europe, but the United States was not involved yet.
D'Alauro was stationed at Kaneohe Naval Air Station, a new military base where Navy and Marine aviators trained, about 12 miles northeast of Pearl Harbor. He spent his days copying and sending encoded messages.
On that long-ago Sunday, he had just finished breakfast and was thinking about going to church.
