WSU basketball notebook: WSU women prepare for key contest at Duluth
While much of the attention has been focused on the Winona State men's basketball team and the NCAA ruling which changed its season, the Warrior women are making some noise of their own.
Coach Scott Ballard's team is playing some of its best basketball of the season, as it swept NSIC games with the University of Minnesota Moorhead and Minnesota Crookston over the weekend.
Winona State, which has dealt with - and recovered from - a rash of injuries that left it with seven players at one point shortly after Christmas, has won four consecutive games, six of seven and 10 of 13.
The late-season surge has pushed the Warriors' record to 17-9 overall and 12-8 in the NSIC, putting it in fifth place in the conference. Winona State travels to fourth-place Duluth (16-8,13-7) for a crucial league game on Friday. The top four teams in the NSIC earn quarterfinal home games Feb. 29 in the conference's postseason tournament.
"Duluth is good. They have good guards, tall posts. It will be a good game," said Winona State's Abby Busch, who scored 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the two games. "After playing this weekend, I feel we have a lot of confidence and feel we can do anything.
