Wilmington VFW post welcomes first female veteran to honor guard

Fresh out of college, Ora Jean Stevenson, then 22, found herself running a bustling orthopedic medical ward deep in the trenches of South Vietnam.
Wounded soldiers would be delivered by helicopter to the medical unit hospital, suffering from broken bones, skin rashes, malaria and other "jungle diseases that we didn't know much about," the San Pedro resident said.
In the mid-1960s, with the Vietnam War dragging on, she was one of the first women enrolled into the Army Nurse Corps, which provided two years of college education and expenses in exchange for three years of military service.
Now, Stevenson is the first active female member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2967 in Wilmington, and the first woman to march alongside the men in uniform as part of the group's honor guard.
"I just wanted to get involved," said Stevenson, now 67. "It was a little intimidating, but they welcomed me right in.
