Palm Beach County woman diagnosed with West Nile Virus

A Palm Beach County woman is recovering from a severe West Nile infection, the first local case in five years, public health officials said Wednesday, urging people to keep up their guard against mosquito bites even as the weather cools.

The virus spreads when mosquitos first bite an infected bird, and then a person. Duval County and the Jacksonville area have seen the most West Nile activity recently – of 25 Florida cases in 2011, they've had 19, including two deaths.

But Palm Beach County hasn't seen a West Nile case since 2006, said health department spokesman Tim O'Connor.

The county has been on a mosquito alert since October, after a different mosquito-borne disease, dengue fever, infected two people. It was the first appearance of dengue here in decades. The simultaneous appearance of West Nile virus was a surprise. The county's sentinel chicken flock, relied upon as an early warning system for mosquito-borne diseases, hadn't shown anything unusual, O'Connor said.
