Teacher dress code under scrutiny in Arizona
PEORIA, Ariz. (USA TODAY) — Teachers here soon may need to spruce up their wardrobes to come to work.
The Peoria Unified School District board wants to adopt a policy that outlines everything from inappropriate footwear to how much skin a blouse or skirt should expose. The district's current policy requires that staff attire be professional but offers no further definition.
District officials said the proposal aims to set clear expectations for employees and avoid awkward confrontations for principals enforcing standards.
"We're setting an example for students," board member Diane Douglas said. "We're teaching them how they should look and behave."
Elsewhere in the country, some school districts have had teacher dress codes for decades. Salem, N.H., has had one since 1977 that prohibits dungaree pants, sneakers, shorts, T-shirts, athletic sweatshirts and athletic sweatpants, except where appropriate to the task being performed.
The proposed Peoria dress code would require men to wear a collared shirt while women's tops or shirts must have at least a 2-inch strap. High temperatures in the area average 72 in February and go up from there. When school begins in mid-August, the average high outside is 105 degrees.
