UNGER UPFRONT: Visits from ghosts of Christmas presents past
It's hard to believe that another holiday season has almost come and gone already. Didn't we just have one a few months ago? It's kind of scary, but all of those clichés about time going faster when you get older are apparently true, at least in my experience.
On the other hand, living through dozens of Christmases can produce a thick, wonderful residue of memories, and it's a thrill to take them out annually and dust them off. At our house, we have boxes and boxes of holiday decorations and related paraphernalia, and each one is packed with stories and mental images of Yuletide seasons gone by.
Those boxes are often like mini time capsules of 20th-century American retailing and culture: at one end of the spectrum we have the carved wooden, hand-painted Nativity set and old glass ornaments that have been in the family for generations; other packages contain more "modern" accoutrements, including 1960s Styrofoam angels, silk poinsettias and Melmac serving bowls. The newest cartons are filled with contemporary decorations such as SpongeBob or Rams ornaments and made-in-China light strands which never seem to last more than two or three years.
