Pine Forest girls surge in second half to top Douglas Byrd 74-51
After a lackluster first half, Pine Forest coach Ben Jones encouraged his team to pick up the defensive intensity.
The Trojans listened and dominated the third quarter to highlight their 74-51 victory over Douglas Byrd in the first round of the Soffe Intensity Holiday Classic.
Pine Forest (9-1) outscored Douglas Byrd 22-3 in the third, forcing 12 turnovers and holding its opponent to 10 percent shooting.
"We weren't playing to our standards in the first half," Jones said. "In the second half, we picked up our pressure on the defensive end and were able to get easy buckets in transition."
Rinesha Frazier scored 15 points off the bench to lead Pine Forest. Ashley May and Monica Holliday each scored 14, while Lauren Evans chipped in 11.
The game was very competitive in the first half, with neither team holding a lead larger than five points.
Pine Forest shot just 30 percent from the field in the first half and had 12 turnovers, but shot 10 of 14 from the free throw line to maintain the lead for the majority of the first two quarters.
