AURORA – The Geneva boys basketball team shot 53 percent from the floor during Tuesday night’s tournament game against host East Aurora, but there was nothing miraculous about the Vikings’ marksmanship.
It was Geneva’s shot selection and ability to generate layups that was most impressive in the Vikings’ 59-53 win against the Tomcats. Geneva feasted on bunnies while the Tomcats fruitlessly chucked three-pointers, the chief contrast between the teams in the opening round of the East Aurora Holiday Tournament.
“The high-percentage shots are great,” Vikings coach Phil Ralston said. “This is probably one of the better teams I’ve had as far as taking high-percentage shots, taking good shots, not taking bad shots.
“We’re getting them, but this game we were just too sloppy.”
Despite Geneva’s 20-for-38 shooting line on the night, Ralston could only muster lukewarm enthusiasm considering the Vikings turned it over 18 times compared to seven giveaways for East Aurora. A rash of turnovers spelled disaster for the Vikings late in the second quarter and for much of the third quarter as the Tomcats turned a 17-point deficit into a one-point lead.
