'Wet Art' turns the iconic wetsuit into a medium of creative expression
It is a marriage that probably should have happened a long time ago.
Two of Santa Cruz County's most high-profile cultural exports "" the surfing community and the visual-arts community "" have moved from occasional flirtations to a full-blown fling in an ambitious project called "Wet Art."
The project features 36 of the finest local artists creating art pieces, using as raw materials the wetsuits of 36 well-known professional surfers. Both rosters read like an all-star team from their respective arenas. Among the artists are Richard Deutsch, Jim Denevan, Ann "annieglass" Morhauser, Jimbo Phillips, Coleen Kiebert, the Great Morgani and plenty others. On the surfer side, there's Richard Schmidt, Zach Wormhoudt, Daryl "Flea" Virotsko, Ratboy Collins, Frosty and Zeuf Hesson and tons of others.
The resulting thunderclap of creativity has produced a collection of breathtakingly unique artworks, all to be displayed Saturday and Sunday at the Rittenhouse Building in downtown Santa Cruz. The exhibit is prologue to a star-studded auction of the pieces, also at the Ritt, to take place Feb. 18, proceeds of which will go to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Cruz County.
