Above all else, Sally Meyerhoff was seeking clarity.

“I think very far into the future,” she wrote in her blog four days after last Christmas. “Not only with athletic goals but also life goals, plans, hopes, dreams, often paralyzing me in the here and now to just GO for it.”

At age 27 – five years into her post-collegiate running career – she finally was discovering more answers to her never-ending barrage of questions.

Meyerhoff committed to a new coach, who shared her vision of being an elite runner and triathlete when others told her by taking a dual training path she would not excel in either – especially in the lead-up to the 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials.

Yet Cindi and Tom Meyerhoff didn’t raise their three children to be followers. Sally sometimes raced wearing a skort – compression shorts covered by a skirt – and long pink compression socks with her red hair in pigtails. She would buy almost anything with a leopard print.
