St. Rita Christian Mothers' cookie sale is Saturday

The much anticipated St. Rita's Christian Mothers' Christmas Cookie Sale starts 9 a.m. Saturday in the church social hall. Rita Pratt, president of the Christian Mothers and in charge of this event, told me they started baking right before Thanksgiving and have baked 1,000 dozen, yes dozen, of Italian knots and 800 dozen, yes dozen, biscotti and pizzalles — plus a huge holiday assortment. That effort requires over 800 pounds, yes pounds, of flour, 300 pounds, yes pounds, of powdered sugar and 120 dozen eggs! They get some donations of sugar and flour and some monetary gifts that help with the packaging materials, because the packaging is also a big project.
There are 18 to 22 faithful volunteers ranging in age from early 20s to 95 years old. Pratt is encouraged that younger volunteers are helping out; they will learn how to carry on this cookie sale tradition that has been going on for more than 40 years. It is a fundraiser for St. Rita's Church. The Rev. Joe Bonafed is very supportive of the project. Pratt said that people come from all over the area to buy cookies on this day each year — some from Greensburg, Pittsburgh, Rostraver, Brownsville and Uniontown. They sell out each year, so get there early.
