We were less happy with the health care system, disliking the fact that money paid for better treatment and that paperwork seemed to take priority over hands-on nursing. However, working night shifts, running our own wards, allowed us to do things the “English way” to a certain extent.

But our year in Cleveland was mainly a happy time during which we travelled the eastern seaboard on our days off. As the 12 months drew to a close, reasoning that we were never likely to be on these shores again, we began making plans to tour the rest of the country with three friends we had made – Molly from Glasgow, Maureen from London and Celia from County Tipperary – and in April 1958 duly set off in Flatus, originally intending to be home for Christmas.
