It is no secret that the Barbadians love their food. You cannot go five minutes
without someone offering up a plate of fresh seafood or ribs and their
passion for fried chicken borders on the fanatical.
Barbadians like their food fresh, tasty and usually slathered in hot pepper
sauce, which should be sampled with extreme caution. When it comes to rum,
Barbadians are devoted to the stuff and it is said that there are as many
rum shops as churches in Barbados, a telling indication that the spirit and
the spiritual go hand in hand on this island.
This passion goes some way to explain why international superstars of the
culinary world converged in Barbados to show off their talents.
For true culinary aficionados, the cookery demonstrations are the place to go.
Held all over the island in venues including The Cliff, Cin Cin By The Sea
and celebrity magnet Sandy Lane, the chefs on show included US heavyweights
Tom Colicchio, Ming Tsai and Marcus Samuelsson as well as French-born,
London-based Bruno Loubet, representing the UK.
