Barbie: You will live a doll's life
For a long time, we walked, talked and bought Barbie and all her paraphernalia. When we visited her friends, we found they were just as obsessed with the Doll.
Parents, who like me, decided a long time ago to never come between their kids and Barbie, just kept pilling up the Barbie products with the hope that, one day, it would pass.
And it did for a while. But the brand owners noticed our absence and how it was crippling their annual turnover. So they went back to the drawing board.
The Barbie tale starts when US mother of two, Ruth Handler, while watching her daughter Barbara play with paper dolls, noticed that she enjoyed giving them adult roles. This was despite most girls' toys at the time being infant-like dolls.
Realising there could be a gap in the market, Handler suggested the idea to her husband Elliot, a co-founder of the Mattel toy company. He was not keen.
During a trip to Europe in 1956 with her children Barbara and Kenneth, Handler came across a German toy doll called Bild Lilli. The adult-figured doll was exactly what Handler had in mind, so she purchased three of the dolls. She gave one to her daughter and took the others back to Mattel.
